Landscape Design and Application
Located within the forested setting of Riva Konakları in Istanbul, this residential landscape implementation project was designed and executed with the objective of creating a simple, timeless outdoor environment that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. The fundamental design approach is based on a minimalist language that emphasizes the existing landscape, avoiding unnecessary visual complexity while establishing a balanced composition through the careful integration of materials, planting, and spatial organization.
One of the principal challenges of the existing garden was the insufficient size of the terrace, which no longer met the functional requirements of the users. In response, the terrace was comprehensively redesigned by expanding its dimensions, redefining its geometry, and renewing the paving materials to align with the overall design language. As a result, the outdoor space was transformed into a comfortable and functional living environment capable of accommodating seating, relaxation, and outdoor dining within a unified setting.
The site’s natural topography was regarded as one of the primary design drivers. Rather than significantly altering the existing terrain, the natural slope was carefully integrated into the design through a series of controlled terraces formed by retaining walls, following the principles of minimal intervention and user safety. This approach preserved the site’s inherent landscape character while creating functional and secure outdoor spaces across different elevations.
The garden circulation system was reorganized to provide a seamless user experience throughout the site. Natural stepping stones separated by gravel joints extend from the staircase and function both as a circulation guide and as an integral component of the landscape composition. Supporting the concept of permeable surfaces, this solution establishes a strong visual relationship with the surrounding forest through its natural materiality while defining circulation in a refined and fluid manner.
The minimalist hardscape composition is balanced by planting schemes carefully selected to respond to the local climate. Plant groups with contrasting textures, forms, and tonal variations soften the strong geometric lines of the hard landscape while creating a dynamic garden atmosphere enriched by seasonal color changes and year-round visual interest. Plant selection prioritized low-maintenance species, ecological compatibility, and long-term sustainability.
The homeowner’s professional appreciation for architecture and contemporary art was considered an essential component of the landscape design. Sculptures positioned at key focal points throughout the garden were conceived not merely as decorative objects but as artistic landmarks that enrich the spatial experience. Consequently, the garden has been transformed into a distinctive outdoor living environment where the natural landscape and contemporary art coexist, creating the atmosphere of an open-air gallery.
To support a sustainable maintenance strategy, natural bark mulch was applied throughout the planting areas. Beyond enhancing the visual quality of the landscape with its organic texture, this treatment contributes to moisture retention, reduces soil evaporation, suppresses weed growth, and promotes healthier plant development by minimizing water consumption. At the same time, it reinforces the woodland character of the site by creating a natural ground layer that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding forest environment.
Ultimately, the project represents a refined example of residential landscape implementation through its respectful approach to the surrounding forest ecosystem, spatial solutions that respond intelligently to the site’s topography, minimalist design language, and landscape concept enriched by the integration of art. The result is a sustainable and contemporary outdoor living environment that responds to the users’ needs while establishing a strong and lasting relationship between architecture, nature, and everyday life.
