Landscape Design and Application
Located within The One Bodrum and commanding panoramic sea views, this landscape design and implementation project represents a highly specialized undertaking in which architecture, engineering, and construction were developed as an integrated whole. The site’s exposure to strong prevailing winds, together with its multi-level topography, required the development of project-specific technical and structural solutions.
The landscape design was planned as a comprehensive spatial composition connecting the entrance level, pool terrace, upper terrace, and lower terrace into a cohesive outdoor living environment. Each level was carefully organized to maximize the experience of the surrounding views, while lounge, dining, and social spaces were functionally arranged in response to the users’ lifestyle and daily requirements.
One of the project’s most significant engineering solutions is the raised paving system implemented across the terrace areas. Adjustable pedestal supports enabled precise level adjustments while concealing electrical installations, irrigation pipework, and other service infrastructure beneath the finished surface, providing both ease of maintenance and a clean, uncluttered appearance.
The existing pergola was expanded to accommodate the newly configured seating and outdoor living areas, providing effective shade without the need for additional umbrellas while preserving its original material palette and architectural character. As one of the project’s primary design objectives was to maintain uninterrupted views of the sea, the structural system was engineered with the minimum possible number of supporting columns. A custom-designed suspended steel system allowed the pergola to be significantly extended while minimizing the need for additional supports, preserving both structural performance and visual transparency. Integrated galvanized steel cassette profiles were completed with custom-manufactured Thermowood Iroko timber elements produced specifically for the project. This bespoke engineering and design solution not only enhances outdoor comfort but has also become one of the residence’s most distinctive architectural features, setting it apart from the surrounding development.
Custom-designed galvanized steel fabrications form another defining component of the project’s architectural language. The LED-illuminated steel staircase, galvanized steel edging elements, bespoke metal entrance gates, and galvanized screening panels enriched with timber detailing contribute both durability and a contemporary aesthetic, reinforcing the project’s distinctive identity.
To support the active use of the swimming pool, the outdoor shower area was finished with naturally durable Iroko decking, introducing a warm material character while ensuring long-term performance in areas exposed to water.
The planting design responds to Bodrum’s Mediterranean climate, prevailing wind conditions, and long-term maintenance requirements through the selection of regionally adapted plant species. Across the expansive hardscape terraces, a composition of fiber and terracotta planters in varying sizes and forms extends the landscape beyond the garden itself, transforming the terraces into a natural continuation of the planting design. This approach softens the architectural hardscape while introducing depth, texture, and seasonal variation throughout the outdoor spaces.
The lighting scheme was carefully designed to highlight both the architectural and landscape elements after dark. Steps, circulation routes, seating areas, and key planting features were thoughtfully illuminated, ensuring safe circulation while creating a distinctive and atmospheric nighttime environment that extends the experience of the landscape beyond sunset.
The One Bodrum Landscape Design and Implementation Project demonstrates a seamless integration of architecture and landscape through innovative engineering solutions developed for challenging site conditions, a spatial organization that successfully connects multiple levels, bespoke metal detailing, and a planting strategy tailored to the Mediterranean climate, resulting in a refined and enduring outdoor living environment.
