Kuzguncuk | Istanbul, 2015
Landscape Design and Application

Located directly on the waterfront in Kuzguncuk, this historic building is currently used as an office and workspace by a company operating in the maritime industry.

As part of the project, landscape and outdoor space interventions were implemented to meet the users’ needs while preserving the building’s existing architectural character and historic fabric without making any alterations to the structure. The design process was guided by the building’s strong relationship with the sea and the distinctive historic atmosphere of Kuzguncuk.

Given the site’s exposure to demanding maritime conditions, materials and plant species with high resistance to salt, moisture, and wind were carefully selected. In this way, aesthetic considerations were addressed alongside the requirements for durability, longevity, and sustainable use.

The existing hardscape areas were repaired and repurposed without interfering with the architectural fabric. Along the waterfront façade, a weather-resistant composite decking system was installed, complemented by stainless steel skirting details.

As part of the bespoke elements developed to reinforce the architectural identity of the project, custom-designed galvanized metal climbing-plant structures, panels featuring stainless steel laser-cut details and integrated Led lighting, entrance branding panels, and imported modular planters were designed and implemented.

On the waterfront side, specially designed rope details reinforced with stainless steel fittings were installed between the glass railings to enable boats to berth safely and in a controlled manner. While addressing a functional requirement, this solution was also conceived as a distinctive design element that complements and reinforces the building’s maritime identity.

Throughout the project, the primary objectives were to preserve the character of the historic building, strengthen its relationship with the sea, and respond to user needs through contemporary, durable, and aesthetically refined solutions.

The resulting intervention is a high-quality outdoor space project that preserves Kuzguncuk’s historic character and the site’s unique waterfront setting, while bringing functionality and design together in a balanced manner.
