Landscape Design and Application

Located within Akasya Acıbadem Residences, this balcony project was developed to transform the existing space into a more functional, comfortable, and aesthetically refined outdoor living environment through a comprehensive re-evaluation of the available space.

Prior to the intervention, the balcony contained approximately 30–40 cm of planting substrate, with vegetation planted directly into this layer. The existing planting area was removed and the use of the balcony was completely reconfigured. In order to make more efficient use of the limited space, the flooring, planting, and structural elements were considered as an integrated design system.

To align the balcony floor level with the interior space, an iroko timber substructure was constructed and finished with natural iroko wood decking. The irrigation and drainage infrastructure was integrated within this system, allowing technical requirements to be resolved discreetly and as part of a cohesive overall design. This approach improved both user comfort and the visual and physical continuity between the interior and exterior spaces.

Custom-designed iroko wood planters were introduced to complement the flooring and reinforce the material identity of the balcony. The use of modular planters in varying dimensions not only defined the planting areas, but also helped break the rigid and linear character of the existing space, creating a stronger sense of spatial depth and identity.

On the vertical surfaces, a custom climbing structure was installed along the partition wall to establish continuity within the landscape. The system was designed to support the vertical growth of climbing plants, allowing the surface to gradually be enveloped by a layer of greenery over time. In this way, the horizontal planting elements were complemented by a vertical layer of landscape.

By integrating materials, planting, and technical infrastructure into a cohesive design approach, the existing balcony was transformed from a space primarily occupied by vegetation into a more functional and natural living environment that extends and connects with the interior. The warm character of natural iroko wood, combined with a controlled and carefully composed planting scheme, creates a timeless and functional balcony design that complements the architectural language of the residence.
