Landscape Design and Application

The landscape implementation project for a private residence located in Gundogan, Bodrum, was designed and developed by Betula Landscape Architecture. The project takes the level differences arising from the site’s natural topography as one of its primary design inputs, structuring the landscape through functional zones defined at varying levels and a strong, carefully considered material palette.

The site’s multi-level topography was reinterpreted by assigning distinct functions to each elevation, thereby enhancing the overall usability and spatial potential of the existing landscape. A galvanized steel staircase connecting the upper level to the entrance level was designed as a simple and functional transition element, complementing the contemporary architectural character of the residence. The abrupt level changes created by the existing topography were carefully terraced using reinforced concrete parapets and natural stone walls, transforming the site’s elevation differences into a more legible and balanced landscape composition.

At the pool level, iroko timber decking was selected to create a warm and natural outdoor living environment. Granite natural stone was used for the entrance level and stair treads, providing a durable and visually coherent material language throughout the project.

The seating area, elevated approximately 50 cm above the surrounding landscape, is complemented by a pergola featuring a galvanized steel structural frame and a motorized, retractable canopy. The operable canopy system provides flexibility in response to Bodrum’s intense sunlight and warm climatic conditions, allowing the space to adapt to varying environmental conditions throughout the day. As a result, the seating area has been transformed from a space intended for limited-time use into a high-quality outdoor living environment that can be comfortably enjoyed throughout different times of the day and across various seasons. To support evening use, integrated LED lighting details were incorporated into the stair treads, providing both functional illumination and a subtle architectural accent.

Corten steel raised planters were introduced as one of the defining elements of the landscape character. The naturally weathered tones of the corten surfaces create a distinctive contrast with the stone and timber materials, contributing a timeless and organic quality to the overall design.

For the planting design, species well adapted to Bodrum’s hot and dry Mediterranean climate were selected to establish a low-maintenance, sustainable, and contextually integrated planting palette. The vegetation was conceived to complement the architectural and material character of the site while responding to its climatic conditions.

Modular, custom-designed planters were introduced to break the visual density created by extensive hardscape areas and establish a more balanced scale throughout the outdoor spaces. Beyond introducing planting into the hardscape, these elements also function as spatial devices that define different areas of use and reinforce the spatial boundaries within the landscape.

The overall design approach considers topography, materiality, planting, circulation, and outdoor living as interconnected components of a unified landscape composition. The natural and climatic character of Bodrum is reinterpreted through contemporary architectural detailing, creating a refined outdoor living environment that is seamlessly integrated with the architecture.
