Landscape Design and Application

The landscape project at Ormanada Residences in Istanbul, for which we undertook the concept, design, and implementation processes, was completed in 2021 through a coordinated division of responsibilities carried out in collaboration with a subcontractor.

The design approach aimed to soften the strong and linear architectural character of the existing terrace while establishing a balanced spatial relationship between hardscape, planting, and natural materials.

In line with this approach, the existing terrace flooring was renewed and replaced with natural stone. Rhythmic plinths were introduced to break the rigid geometry created by the long, linear steps. Modular planters positioned on these plinths create a repetitive rhythm along the terrace, establishing a visual connection between the horizontal architectural lines and the planting elements.

The existing composite decking around the pool was removed and replaced with iroko timber, selected for its natural texture and timeless character. This intervention created a warmer, more natural surface around the pool, complementing the architectural character of the residence.

For the planting design, a specimen-form Olea europaea was selected as the main focal point of the terrace. With its sculptural trunk and strong silhouette, the olive tree creates a natural focal point at the center of the landscape composition. Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’ was introduced to reinforce the vertical axis. These vertically oriented planting elements create a contrast with the horizontal configuration of the terrace, adding height and depth to the space.

Throughout the terrace, the use of modular planters in varying sizes and forms breaks the continuity of the hardscape and creates a more dynamic and inhabitable outdoor environment through layered planting. By considering materiality, planting, and architectural geometry as an integrated whole, the design establishes a simple, natural, and cohesive landscape language that reinforces the character of the existing structure.
