Landscape Design and Application
The landscape implementation project carried out in Beykoz Acarkent was designed as a transformation of the existing garden area, characterized by varying elevation levels, into a functional and sophisticated outdoor living environment that integrates seamlessly with contemporary architecture. Organized into three main zones — the entrance level, terrace level, and pool level — the project adopts a holistic landscape design approach that transforms the existing topographical variations into design opportunities while creating diverse usage scenarios at each level.
The entrance area of the project was completely reinterpreted to create a strong arrival experience that reinforces the contemporary architectural identity of the residence. The floating staircase system, designed with galvanized steel construction, achieves a striking sculptural appearance at night through integrated LED lighting details embedded within the steps and risers. Decorative metal strip applications on the exposed concrete walls break the monotony of the existing hard surfaces, adding a dynamic and refined character to the architectural elements.
Along the circulation axis connecting the entrance level to the lower garden terraces, stepping stones were applied over a river gravel surface to enhance the perception of a natural landscape transition. Corten steel raised planters used within these transition zones create a warm material contrast that complements the modern architectural language, while simultaneously providing the additional soil depth required for planting design.
At the lower garden level, a large swimming pool was designed at a scale that enhances the spatial depth and perception of the landscape. One of the most distinctive features of the project, the surrounding lawn area and low-level deck platform, was constructed as a cantilevered structural system through advanced engineering solutions, maximizing the potential of the existing level differences. The shallow sunbathing area integrated into the pool transforms the water element from a purely visual feature into a functional space that enhances user experience.
The low-level deck area featuring exposed concrete seating elements was designed in harmony with the modern architectural concept. Custom-designed corten decorative spheres and a fireplace create a strong focal point within the space. The selected material palette combines the industrial character of concrete with the natural aging texture of corten steel, creating a timeless and sophisticated atmosphere.
Within the planting areas positioned on the cantilevered deck, custom-designed corten steel raised elements were implemented to provide sufficient root volume for plant development. This technical solution enabled the creation of strong planting compositions even within areas with limited structural depth, establishing a balanced relationship between structural landscape elements and planting design.
The site’s natural slope and elevation differences were transformed into design advantages, creating alternative outdoor spaces where visual connections to the surrounding landscape could be preserved from different points of the garden. Seating, relaxation, and planting areas positioned at each level create a continuous spatial experience throughout the entire garden.
To soften the strong architectural impact of the extensive terrace areas, custom-designed planters in various scales, textures, and materials were incorporated into the design. These elements define spatial boundaries, enhance functional use of the areas, and establish a balanced transition between hardscape surfaces and natural vegetation.
Throughout the entire project, the modern architectural language is balanced through the use of galvanized steel, corten steel, exposed concrete, natural stone, and carefully selected planting textures. By reinterpreting the opportunities offered by the existing topography through innovative landscape solutions, the project creates a distinctive, high-quality garden environment designed for year-round use and enriched outdoor living.
