Landscape Design and Application

The landscape implementation project located in Emirgan, Sarıyer, is based on the transformation of an existing garden structure composed of multiple levels into a functional, aesthetic, and sustainable outdoor living environment that responds to user needs. The garden, consisting of three distinct elevations — the entrance level, intermediate level, and lower level — has been redesigned through landscape architectural and engineering solutions to overcome existing topographical challenges, accessibility issues, and significant level differences.

The primary design approach of the project focuses on the reinterpretation and activation of previously underutilized garden levels, creating an outdoor space that can be experienced throughout the year, integrates seamlessly with the architectural structure, and enhances user interaction with the landscape. The sloped terrain conditions and challenging site constraints required detailed level planning, structural landscape interventions, and custom-designed construction solutions.

At the garden entrance, galvanized steel structural elements, vehicle access gates, and pedestrian gates were designed to complement the contemporary architectural character of the building. A strong spatial identity was created along the entrance axis through glass-roofed vine pergola structures, while custom-produced large corten steel planters were introduced to reinforce the unique architectural expression of the site. Galvanized metal elevation elements were incorporated to increase soil depth required for plant development, creating technically efficient and aesthetically integrated solutions.

All garden stairs, transitions, and circulation routes were redesigned to provide safe and comfortable movement between different levels. Decorative groove detailing was applied to reduce the dominant visual impact of the high retaining walls, establishing a balanced relationship between hardscape surfaces and planted areas.

The lower-level living area was designed with iroko decking to create a warm and natural ground character. A recirculating ornamental water feature, composed of stone cladding details, iroko surfaces, and corten steel accents, introduces visual depth and a sense of tranquility to the space. Continuing the same design language, a custom-designed fireplace was integrated into the seating area, enabling the garden to function as an active outdoor living space throughout different seasons.

To support internal circulation within the garden, natural stone stepping elements were placed over a graded river gravel surface. Custom-cut natural stones integrated within the gravel landscape, together with carefully composed planting arrangements, create transitional zones that enhance the perception of a natural landscape experience.

The seating area is covered with a custom-designed pergola featuring a galvanized steel structure and glass roof detailing. Climbing plants directed along the pergola structure are intended to create natural shading and a gradually developing green layer over time.

Throughout the entire project, a balanced relationship has been established between contemporary architecture and natural landscape elements. Through carefully selected materials, level solutions, planting strategies, and structural landscape applications, a timeless and holistic garden design has been realized, providing a comfortable and adaptable outdoor environment that can be experienced throughout both summer and winter seasons.
