Landscape Design and Application
Located along the banks of the Riva River, the approximately 2,500 m² project site has been conceived through a contemporary landscape design approach that preserves the character of the existing natural topography while addressing the site’s gradient in a controlled and functional manner. The fundamental design strategy is centered on strengthening the relationship between architecture, landscape, and water, creating a high-quality outdoor living environment that integrates with nature, accommodates diverse patterns of use, and remains actively usable throughout the year. The existing slope has been considered a key design input; changes in level are resolved through board-formed concrete platforms, steps, and terraces, enabling the site to be experienced across multiple elevations. As the landscape approaches the river level, its relationship with the water becomes increasingly pronounced.
In addition to everyday use, the landscape has been structured as a flexible outdoor environment capable of accommodating private gatherings, social occasions, and a variety of events. The outdoor spaces, articulated at different levels and with distinct programmatic characters, are designed to respond to changing needs without being limited to a single mode of use.
One of the project’s most distinctive characteristics is its direct and uninterrupted relationship with the Riva River. In order to maximize the potential of the riverside setting, a dedicated boat lift system was incorporated into the project. Taking into consideration the muddy and fluctuating ground conditions of the riverbed, a Sunstream solar-powered boat lift system, specially sourced from abroad, was selected to support the long-term protection and usability of the boat. By preventing the boat from remaining continuously submerged and in contact with the riverbed, the system reduces the duration of exposure of the hull and mechanical components to water, mud, and other environmental factors, thereby contributing to improved protection, reduced maintenance requirements, and an extended service life.
To facilitate everyday access to the boat, a floating dock accessed via a stainless-steel ladder was also designed. Adapting to fluctuations in water level, the floating dock provides users with safe and controlled access to the river while establishing a functional interface between the landscape and the water.
Complementary elements within the project, including the container guest house, outdoor jacuzzi area, and winter garden, have been integrated to enable the landscape to remain active and functional across different seasons and throughout the year. These elements are conceived as spaces that are independent from the primary living areas while remaining fully integrated into the overall landscape composition. User comfort, privacy, and functionality have been considered collectively in the planning and detailing of these spaces.
The project’s material palette is based on a balanced combination of Corten steel, board-formed concrete, natural stone, and timber. The composition, defined through the interplay of the materials’ colors, textures, and aging characteristics, integrates the contemporary architectural language with the organic character of the natural setting. In particular, the naturally developing patina of Corten steel over time complements the landscape’s gradual transformation along the riverfront, allowing the material expression to evolve and retain its character over time. Material selections and detailing throughout the project have been developed to establish a restrained yet distinctive architectural expression, with a balanced continuity between hardscape, built elements, and planting.
Completed in 2013, the project brings together aesthetic design and advanced engineering solutions. In 2014, it was awarded the PLANT Magazine Award in the Mixed-Use Project and Implementation Category, earning recognition as one of the exemplary landscape applications in the sector.
